Like I said earlier, Harding started seriously looking for them about two weeks before. What got him started was a scene he witnessed at Earl’s Grill.

He was going to Earl’s about twice a week, mainly to make time with Miriam, and he usually sat at the counter and drank coffee and chatted her up. One night it wasn’t too busy, so he sat in a booth. He liked that because then Miriam could sit with him and count up her tips while he hit on her. The way Harding tells it, on this night the angels were already there when he sat down.

He calls them angels now because he knows them, but he didn’t know they were anything special then. Regardless, he didn’t notice them at first.

Now keep in mind, Harding doesn’t usually eavesdrop, but soon he noticed that their conversation was too strange to ignore. At the time he thought that maybe they were actors practicing their lines, or honing their method acting skills. It wasn’t until later when he realized that he had overheard guardian angels talking about the people they were assigned to watch over.

There were two angels there that night, talking about some very famous people like Mae West and Harry Truman and JFK. They had an attitude of superiority, talking about them as if they were clients, or maybe subjects in an experiment. It was an indifferent, clinical sort of conversation, and that piqued his interest.

He wasn’t able to get a good look at them, since they were sitting behind him, but he did form an impression of how they sounded. One of them seemed more eager and less experienced, and the other sounded smoother and calmer, like he was older than the first one. Harding started paying closer attention when he heard the younger one say, somewhat worriedly, “I am not looking forward to this meeting with God later. He really liked Princess Di, and He is going to want to know how I let her die like that. You know how it is when things get going too fast, but God might not go for that. I remember Him telling me once how pleased He was that she took up the land mine issue. That’s what really did it for Him. You know God, He always likes it when people do a little extra for the children.”
